MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
What is PAUSE mentorship?
The goal of PAUSE mentorship is to connect first and second year psychology students with upper year mentors that share similar interests, experiences and aspirations. The purpose of this program is to guide first and second year students in their undergraduate experience providing:
-
information in the navigation of university and UTM
-
support, advice, and assistance
-
offering academic support or providing the mentee with the tools needed to make and achieve goals
-
fostering a sense of belonging and community for both the mentors and mentees
Why should you sign up?
Both mentors and mentees gain valuable experiences through the mentorship events, such as gaining communication skills, leadership skills and much more!
Mentorship students form meaningful connections within the psychology community at UTM through mentorship exclusive events which not only foster a sense of belonging but also provide valuable networking opportunities.

Testimonials
“Being a first year mentee in the PAUSE mentorship program immediately connected me to a small community of students that were all interested in Psychology - what more could you wish for?
For me the answer is information and confidence: My mentor, a 4th year Psychology student who also dabbled in CCIT courses, simply knew how to approach specific questions better than I did back then. How do you approach a professor if you aren't satisfied with your marks? IDK, better ask my mentor. How do I plan my courses for second year and apply to POSt? Ask the mentor for their opinion.
That is not to say that my mentor always knew everything.. they are a person too, and in reality there will be many people at UTM that you will consider your mentor even if it isn't through a program. But for me this PAUSE mentor was my starting point that has ultimately helped unravel some reservations I had when it came to reaching out to people when I needed help.”

“When I signed up as a mentor with PAUSE, I didn’t anticipate having as much fun as I did. Despite discussing some heavy and challenging topics with my mentee—who has now become a friend—we navigated through everything as best as we could. Overall, my experience was excellent. The flexibility to create my own schedule, while adhering to straightforward guidelines, was a significant benefit. This role provided me with valuable experience and a chance to connect with others in the UTM community.
Approaching the role with a positive and open mindset greatly contributed to the smooth and enjoyable experience. I was lucky to be paired with a mentee who, despite initial shyness, gradually opened up. We fostered a supportive and friendly atmosphere that felt more like a casual catch-up than a formal mentoring session. Joining PAUSE as a mentor was a rewarding opportunity for personal growth and for building meaningful connections within the UTM community.”

“Signing up to be a mentee with PAUSE has to be one of the best things I did in first year. Between POST, class selections, time management, study habits etc, I felt like I knew absolutely nothing when I started at UTM, and being paired with a mentor who had been through the same thing and wanted to help me was a huge game changer. There are so many resources, and helpful habits that I never would have had if I hadn’t been a part of mentorship.
Along with this, the mentorship community was so welcoming and I really enjoyed the different mentorship events. From academic cantered events to destressors, I always left the events happy that I chose to attend and having formed new connections within the community. The PAUSE mentorship program definitely made a positive impact on my time at UTM and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone.”
